GOP Destroys Integrity of National Convention, Flagrantly Cheats Ron Paul Out of Nomination

“It is not because men’s desires are strong that they act ill; it is because their consciences are weak.”

John Stuart Mill, On Liberty

I am so frustrated and angry with the blatant cheating that went on at the Republican National Convention in Tampa today. I am ashamed of my national party’s actions. I sat openmouthed, flabbergasted, appalled at the actions that they took to shut the liberty folks out.

Look…maybe Ron Paul had no chance to win. Romney had more delegates (though some of those were seated by deception and coercion.) That is not the point now. Do we, as Republicans, have so little respect for others that it is okay to cheat a 30 year Republican Congressman out of a legitimate nomination that he earned? By following the rules, no less?

Is it also okay that we completely ignore the will of the elected delegates who have achieved plurality and submitted nomination papers? Those papers were delivered to Preibus by Iowa’s Lieutenant Governor, Kim Reynolds, the Convention Secretary, over an hour before the call for nomination, the rolling roll call. She claims that it was her job to accept and deliver them, and that anything after that was the will of the Republican National Committee. Therefore, the will of the RNC was to cheat Ron Paul out of a legitimate nomination and to break their own rules.

Ron Paul needed a plurality of five states to have his name submitted for nomination. He received six. Those papers were submitted in a timely manner and ignored.  The delegates from those six states followed the rules that required that plurality, only to be shot down by their own party out of spite.

Earlier, during the Resolution to adopt the rules, points of order were called and ignored. Delegates were outraged, and rightly so. The microphones on the floor were shut off and Romney supporters were instructed to chant to drown out any opposition.

Boehner obviously disregarded a division on the floor and gave the vote to the Ayes when the Nays were clearly more numerous. This was in order to suppress a Minority Report that had enough signatures to be brought up for debate. Morton Blackwell, who is a respected, life long Republican and the Republican National Committeeman from Virginia, gained those signatures to oppose adoption of the new rules. Rumor says that the RNC didn’t send him a bus to get to the convention.

Iowa’s delegation caught a ride with the Virgin Islands. Their bus never came. Virginia’s bus was over an hour late, and they were stuck circling outside of the convention hall, pleading to be let off the bus so that they could be seated.

The Florida delegation was also stranded without buses. Convention coordinators “forgot” and left them stuck downtown for about 40 minutes.

California’s buses were more than an hour late.

Minnesota’s delegation chair, Marianne Stebbins, mentioned that her state knows how to hold a convention with dignity. Minnesota submitted 33 out of 40 votes for Ron Paul.

Iowa stood proud, with Drew Ivers announcing that Iowa loves their liberty. 22 of 28 votes from Iowa for Ron Paul.

Nevada had 17 of 28 for Ron Paul.

Louisiana’s chair called the RNC out on ignoring the nomination, listing the six states who had plurality. Louisiana had all of their delegates stripped by the Romney campaign, and was able to gain back 17 for Ron Paul.

Alaska cast half of their 18 votes for Paul.

Maine, who have fought valiantly and have been stripped of delegates, had half of their delegation walk out and hold their own mock convention. Kudos to those brave patriots who have stood up against their opposition. Governor LePage stayed true to his word to boycott if his delegates were not seated, and did not attend the convention.

I am embarrassed by the actions of the party today. Whether or not Paul would have won, they disrespected a good man who earned a nomination, and dishonored states with elected delegates who wished to cast a vote for someone other than the RNC’s cash cow, Romney.

I am proud of the states, including my own state of Iowa, who stood up for liberty, at any cost.

We are the future of the Republican party, and the GOP just shot themselves in the foot. The RNC and the Romney campaign, in their shameless grab for power and disregard of their own rules, just alienated at least 30% of the new voters, and some life long Republicans, in order to elect someone who is not much different from the Democrat sitting in office as we speak.

Romney’s nomination is not a win for the Republican party. He dropped out in 2008 when he was beaten by McCain, who, in turn, was beaten by Barack Obama.

What is more important to the RNC, saving face or saving America? Sadly, the RNC may have just doomed America to another four years under Obama, with their dog and pony show in Tampa. The Liberty folks have fought tooth and nail and worked hard to get to where we are now, and the National party treats us as something they need to hide away or sweep under the rug.

We will not go away. Freedom is popular.

“Governments, whether they’re dictatorships or democracies, reflect the people. When the people get fed up, they throw them out.”

Republican’s threw Ron under the bus, time to throw the Party under the bus!!!!! I’m not voting Repubtard, or Demonkraut!!!!!

  2. KC Ted says:

My feelings as well. I now need to look for another party to support. The LP is looking mighty good.

    • Tom Martin says:

I hear ya KC, I’m waiting until next week to start a huge research campaign on candidates outside the big 2 Party’s!!!!!

    • The Libertarian party is the party to support if you are a Ron Paul supporter. The only sad part of voting 3rd party, is that most 3rd party votes will be cast by disgruntled Republicans, as the Democrats are both too stupid and stubborn to see and understand that their party is every bit as corrupt and full of shit as the Republican party. If we wind up with another 4 years of Obama because former Republicans do what is right by not supporting the mainstream parties, that will be a shame.

      • Dennis Ringler says:

This one isn’t too stupid or stubborn to see the BS going on. I made a mistake 4 years ago voting for Obama and have regretted it for the last year after “Waking Up”. This country cannot afford another 4 years of Obama or his twin Romney nor their banker puppet masters.

      • Jay says:

voting for the lesser of two evils is to live cowering in fear.

You are right that Obama and the dems are just as corrupt and murderous. But let them win and they will take the blame for the economy since they clearly have no intelligent plan to really do anything for main street. It may be better for a democrat to limp to victory this time around than for someone like Romney to come in and distract everyone from the larger issues.

  3. Grey says:

The levels of misrepresentation and outright lies presented in this editorial would be humorous, if they weren’t sickening. There are so many flat-out misstatements and “creative re-interpretations” that it’s pointless to attempt to answer them all.

One of the most fundamental ones, however, is the simple fact that Ron Paul supporters continue to insist that if a delegate personally supports Ron Paul, then he or she is legally entitled to vote for Ron Paul, regardless of which candidate the delegate has been allocated to.

Ron Paul supporters think that if a majority of delegates in a state personally support Ron Paul, then that state “has a majority or plurality for Ron Paul.” That simply is NOT how it works. A majority or plurality is determined by how many delegates are ALLOCATED to each candidate. Ron Paul got an allocated majority or plurality in only 3 states. That is reality. No matter how you try to spin it, re-interpret it, or simply deny it, the facts won’t change.

One other point I will challenge: the Louisiana delegates for Ron Paul were NOT “stripped by Mitt Romney.” Ron Paul supporters in Louisiana broke away from the officially convened state convention and formed their own “convention,” in direct violation of Louisiana Republican Party rules, as well as rules of parliamentary procedure. As a result, any actions or votes taken by this breakaway convention were automatically null and void. Like it or not, that’s just the way it works, folks.

So what actually happened in Louisiana is that the breakaway convention of Ron Paul supporters elected a delegate slate consisting entirely of Ron Paul delegates, despite the fact that Ron Paul won less than 1/3 of the popular vote in Louisiana. On the other hand, the REAL Louisiana state convention elected a slate of delegates which represented the actual distribution of the popular vote from the primary. Not surprisingly, the Louisiana Republican Party endorsed the delegate slate elected by the REAL, official convention. And not surprisingly, the Republican National Committee recognized the delegate slate that was endorsed by the state, not a false slate elected by a rebel group of partisans.

  6. Barb Denofa says:

Greg, you seem to have all your facts confused.. you need to read up..
    http://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/politics/item/11595-louisiana-gop-convention-splits-ron-paul-wins-majority-convention
The campaign says that the delegate list that was released by the LA GOP was chosen against the rules, and the Paul supporters were forced to hold a rump convention, in which the majority attended.

“We believe that they grossly and blatantly and repeatedly violated their party rules and elected a delegation that was improper,” said Jesse Benton, chair for the Paul campaign. “We believe that our rump convention is the legitimate delegation and they have a right to be seated at the Republican National Convention.” The LA GOP claims to have kept constant contact with the Paul campaign after the convention, a claim that Benton says is false. “We were hardly contacted,” said Benton. “They have been extremely non-communicative. They gave us a cold shoulder.”

And NO Paul people do not think that they are entitled, just because the majority are his supporters, but they came prepare and educated with the rules in hand, the problem is that the rules were not followed by the Romney side.

  7. JohnnyUtahforronpaul says:

RRoO what edition are we on now the 10th or 11th? allow for rump conventions when the chair ignores motions or calls of order that MUST, not may, MUST be immediately addressed. And assuming there was a quorum of caucus convention attendees at that rump convention, they should be seated.

But the tools of the party don’t follow the rules when they are whipped. period.

  9. Cindy Koestler says:

Kick his butt you guys. I know Angie on a site as a friend in a group who are very educated people, She herself, has educated herself and I would love to see you discuss rules with her. You know nothing of what you talk about, if the RNC has endorsed Romney then did he not have these delegates stripped? Yes they did, and they did it in front of every body. Please Grey tell me what that says? And good job everyone else.. Great story

  10. Mike says:

They shot themselves alright, but I don’t think it was in the foot… Since they will not likely be able to reproduce, at least until they grow another one, you’re free to guess where I think they shot themselves!

  11. T says:

They play by different rules depending on whose delegates they are. With all these stripping of delegates Paul’s delegates, they conveniently forgot that the Virgin Islands was Paul’s first win except that their Paul delegate turned out to be a secret Romney delegate. If it doesn’t work both ways, something stinks. We need to take over the RNC committee. It;s the only way to get a fair vote after this Stalin style vote counting… Too bad they stopped resigning with Maine when caught after Iowa and Nevada.

  12. RevNowWhileWeCan says:

I must respectfully disagree and I believe ALL Paul supporters must LEAVE the republican party! They have again changed the rules and the “people” will no longer have their say. It cannot be overstated that us Paul supporters knew we had to win this fight from the bottom up and when we made that move, the establishment made sure this cannot happen again. The only way is to make the republicans obsolete once again from the grassroots with our massive following of distraught republicans, libertarians, constitutionalists and the fastest growing party of all, the independents. With a concerted effort and the greatest organizational skills of ALL parties, we surly can unify and make the republicans an non issue!

    • Kent Perry says:

Hey RevNowWhileWeCan: Obviously you have forgotten who it was the Republicans called the most far left democrat in the Democratic Party. Do you know who it was ?

Ill remind you because he is the same person that has quite literally espoused every anti American bill and admitted he would have signed the same un-constitutional legislation you republicans have been bitching about Obama for signing. He is in fact the reason the word RINO has become part of the lexicon of election politics after he switched party’s and his name is Mitt Romney. Just like you can’t make a law abiding Gun Owner safer by taking away his their guns, you also can’t restore the country supporting candidates that want the same power to take your constitutional rights away

So what do Republican voters so disgusted with Obama’s unconstitutional direction for this country tell us to do?

They tell us NOT to vote for someone like Ron Paul who is against all of Obama’s legislation because they say if we do, it is a vote for Obama. Then offer us Mitt Romney, someone that has said on National TV that he would have signed the same Bill (NDAA) the republicans hate Obama for signing because for some reason when Republicans do the same evil shit, it is less evil.

      Yes Seriously.

We used to use common sense and voted for people that were for or against the same things we were for or against.

Now, believe it or not, we vote for someone that agrees with the same things we don’t like about the guy we want to replace by telling everyone not to vote for the guy that agrees with us because a vote for him is a vote for the guy we want to replace. Good grief, and the Republicans say the democrats don’t make any sense.

  13. Linda Chatlos Clements says:

I keep telling all of the Paulines bent on writing in RonPaul what a great plan that is
Deny Romney the vote and punish America with 4 more years if Obama and BETTER with BHOs 2 new S.C. justices deny us our constitution for the next THIRTY PLUS years. PERFECT plan crybabies.

    • I never said anything about a write in. If the convention results cannot be challenged, and I think that the adoption of the rules can be, since not all were seated, especially Blackwell, who was on the Rules Committee, if I am not mistaken.

    • Kent Perry says:

    • Kent Perry says:

Ya know, there is a word for people like you who piss off the very voters you are going to need, to enable your precious Romney to win. It is the same word that covers the entire GOP for doing the same thing, pissing people off will persuade them to your way of thinking and your candidate.

      That word for them is,

      S-T-U-P-I-D !

Grey, please explain what you’re talking about. Everything I’ve read states that 9 out of 10 times the Paul supporters followed the GOP rules to the letter, and the Romney supporters were the ones that violated their own rules. It’s over now, but it was ugly, and un-American how the GOP is corrupt and willing to break, bend, and change their own rules to suit the frontrunner candidate over the grassroots challenger candidate.

    • Kent Perry says:

Yep The republicans have proven there is not only no difference between Romney and Obama, but there is now, no difference between the Republican Party and the Democrat Party. They BOTH have their brains in their ass

As a State Delegate from Iowa, I am absolutely mortified by the behavior of those in the party who choose to bully, lie, manipulate and cast aspersions at those of us who have been elected to represent the people of our districts. There are people in this country that are apparently afraid that others might become too free, have too much success, and enjoy the fruits of that success too much. We still have people on our county Central Committee who want to censure those of us in the Liberty movement because some of us have serious moral reservations about voting for this nominee. The lack of facts in their arguments and the level of rhetoric and hyperbole is astonishing. One esteemed gentlemen even went so far as to state that,”Ron Paul is a loser.”, and “has never accomplished anything.” This is the kind of people we are dealing with.

How do we handle bullies? We fight back twice as hard, and twice as often. Don’t give up. Every time you go to a parade, help with a fund raiser or speak up at a meeting, you are fighting tyranny. We will not go away.

    God Bless this troubled country.

    • Hear, hear! I was a state delegate for Iowa as well. In District 2, our chair actually shoved a nominee for alternate delegate. Bob Andersen from Johnson county was one of the people who was passing out the Unity slate crap. A good portion of the Romney people were incredibly rude…we have a great group of people on the SCC, in other committees, and we have organizations like Liberty PAC who are helping to shape the RPI. We won’t back down in Iowa.

    • Kent Perry says:

You make a good point which can be extended over all the GOP who now loses the luxury for complaining about Obama by supporting a candidate along with his choice of VP that has literally, either voted for the same legislation Obama has signed, (NDAA, Patriot act, illegal wars, increase deficit, Bailouts, Tarp, etc,) OR invented (Romneycare the template for Obamacare). They keep telling everyone, “Romney is the one that can beat Obama”. Who said so? Isn’t that for we the people to decide? As long as Romney is the only one willing to “BE” Obama,

he will be the only one,

      allowed to try.

I hate to tell you this, but I think it was a deliberate action to ensure Obama’s re-election. The GOP upper echelon has been overrun by progressives. It’s soooo obvious if one stands back far enough to see the whole picture. Romney is playing the McCain role of ’08, and doing an excellent job of it, too…

IMO, the GOP is dead, and the Socialist Republican Party, sister party to the Socialist Democrat Party, has taken over. I will more than likely never cast a favorable vote to either of these parties ever again, especially at the national level.
